Metropolitan Area Planning Council, MA
The Metropolitan Area Planning Council prepared the “South Shore Coastal Hazards and Adaptation Study” for the towns of Duxbury, Marshfield, and Scituate in 2011. The plan details the risks faced by the south shore, develops adaptation recommendations, and suggests possible funding opportunities. In March of 2015 MAPC put out the Metro Boston Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy Report. In 2016 they developed the “Keep Cool” web page for Metro Boston that provides a searchable map of public places throughout Greater Boston for cooling off and staying cool on hot days, as well as information on climate change and summer temperatures, and resources for obtaining rebates, and tips for staying safe. The Minuteman Advisory Group on Interlocal Coordination (MAGIC) and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) initiated a planning process to assess vulnerabilities from the predicted impacts of climate change (i.e., changing precipitation and temperatures), and to develop an action plan for implementing adaptation and mitigation strategies. The project was a unique opportunity to apply climate assessment and planning methodologies to the issues faced by inland areas (e.g., those unrelated to sea level rise) and provide a model for other MAPC municipalities and regions and other areas in the Commonwealth. The MAPC supports the Metropolitan Mayors Coalition including 14 communities who signed commitments to work collectively on climate preparedness and mitigation.
